Across the country, on Main Streets and in Downtowns, a renaissance of revitalization is taking place. Communities are changing to accommodate the movement toward the convenience and connectivity of walkable neighborhoods. New businesses, restaurants, and shops are filling the formerly vacant buildings of city centers. The Greater Fort Wayne region of Northeast Indiana is excited to be counted among the number of communities that is attracting talented people and companies to our diverse growing area.

REDEVELOPMENT EFFORTS

There are several major innovative projects currently in the works in downtown Fort Wayne including the riverfront development, the completion of the Ash Skyline Center, Superior Lofts, and Electric Works.

Construction has also begun on the $32.2 million project: “The Landing” on West Columbia Street in Fort Wayne. The Landing project is uniquely important to the history of Fort Wayne. For nearly a century, The Landing was the central business district of Fort Wayne, and home to the first Post Office (1820), hotel (1823), newspaper (1833), theater (1851), and railway station (1853).

Fort Wayne is also building of a one-of-a-kind boutique hotel that will be constructed at the northwest corner of Harrison and Main Streets. (Rendering seen above.) Provenance Hotels will be working together with Barbara Bradley Baekgaard (co-founder of Vera Bradley, Inc.) to bring an upscale, unique hotel to Fort Wayne that will be a point of destination for businesses and visitors.

In Steuben County, the public square in Downtown Angola has seen many changes in an effort to revitalize the city center and businesses located there. A grant, funded by the city, has been matching business owners dollar for dollar, up to $5,000, for the beautification of downtown building facades.

A similar grant program is changing the face of downtown Auburn. Known as the “Home of the Classics,” Auburn seeks to create a sustainable and economically feasible future for the residents and businesses through its revitalization efforts.
