In Northeast Indiana, winter's icy grasp is not something that can be ignored. Prepping your home for winter with this fall home checklist can help you avoid cold discomfort, winter damage, and high utility bills.

INSULATION & CAULK

Check to see that you have enough insulation to guard against the winter chill. Examine the seals around your windows and doors and caulk or add weather stripping to keep out the cold and pests.

FALL INSPECTIONS

Inspect your furnace, fireplace, and smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they are fully operational. If you have a backup power generator, be sure to test it and refill your gasoline.

OUTDOOR MAINTENANCE

Clear all leaves and debris from your gutters and downspouts to prevent water buildup and ice dams. Don't forget to detach your garden hoses from outdoor spigots and apply a sealant to your driveway to prevent the wear and tear caused by ice, salt, and snow.

WINTER GARDEN PREP

Harvest remaining fruits and vegetables before the first hard freeze. Cover your garden beds with raked fall leaves to feed them in the spring. Amend your soil for spring so the nutrients have time to be absorbed.

Fall in Northeast Indiana offers a vibrant tapestry of colors and a crispness in the air which is a perfect time for proactive home preparation. As the snowflakes dance outside your window this winter, you'll relish in the warmth and comfort of your well-prepared home.
